The Reefhouse is located in the Bravos de Boston beach neighborhood of Vieques, on the north side of the island.  A short walk away is the Bravo Hotel  - we recommend this if you want to eat out on your first night. In the evening, with the smell of jasmine in the air, it's a lovely walk (10-15 minutes) to the village of Isabel Segundo to wander around the plaza, visit a pub, or dine at one of the restaurants. The lovely old lighthouse is a short walk toward the village, as is Siddhia Hutchinson's gallery.

From the Reefhouse, you can watch the fishing boats leave, the ferries arrive and depart, the pelicans dive-bombing into the water, and the snowy egrets flapping by. If there are waves, you'll see the local kids out surfing all day from the local beach. Island horses meander and graze along the beach road that winds past (keep the gates closed or they'll be eating your flowers!). Ginger, hibiscus, heliconia, bougainvillea - and hummingbirds and butterflies hovering in your view. There are banana trees, mangos, papayas, and coconuts. And always the warm breezes and the sound of the surf...

Here are some comments from our guest book:

As we sat in the cold of Kansas in February thinking of a place for our summer vacation, we came across an island called Vieques. We wanted a place to relax and veg on the beach and it sounded like the right place. Then we found this house on the internet and here we are. Im not sure there is a better place to relax and forget the cares of your real world. The house is wonderful. Well-equipped. Great views and close enough to walk to a good breakfast at Mamasongas. What can you say about the spectacular beaches? Red Beach with its pure, white sand and gently sloping bottom. Blue Beach with its secluded cabanas and unspoiled beauty, Green Beach with its Mangrove forest. Sun Bay, a delight with palm trees for shade and long walks in the sand.  Biobay with Island Adventures is something you simply have to do. It is an experience you will not be able to adequately describe. Of the restaurants, Chez Shack was our favourite, followed by Trade Winds. Thanks. We leave in the morning well rested and glad to have had these last eight days on this lovely island.

We had a wonderful time in Vieques and enjoyed staying at the Reef House...The materials you prepared for your guests were excellent. We checked out all the beaches and snorkelled at each of them. We were under water almost every day. We also found that the groceries and fresh veggies were quite adequate - maybe it was the season. The bakeries were superb. There was a Pan con Queso that we fell in love with. Thanks for sharing your house with us. It was a wonderful two weeks

***Media Luna is a calm place to get your mask wet!

***Consider bringing mask on Biobay tour, COOL!

Top Snorkelling Spots:

1)      Island in Esperanza harbour

2)      Look for HUGE turtle to RIGHT of sandy spit AM and PM
Swim out with care and rest on sand spit. Sunscreen is a must! Best and most beautiful coral formations to "left" as you face island between white boulder and sailboat hull.

Also good for seeing LOTS of fish small and large. Go to the Sun Bay side of Esperanza Harbor. Walk along sandy arc (Bring shoes!) and snorkel in shallows for small stuff and toward month of bay for great stuff!

Thank you so much for a wonderful stay at the Caribbean Reefhouse! What a lovely view thank you for making everything so easy! We enjoyed the Sun Bay Beach the first day and frolicked in the beautiful blue ocean, soaking up the sun and napping in the shade of the palm trees. Almost had the beach to ourselves! Lovely lunch at Bananas in Esperanza then home for our evening excursion to the Biobay. Our little Mitchwas so excited, he wore the life preserver during the wait while the crowd was gathering and the sun was setting. Then, what a treat to swim in sparkling water with the tiny lights of the bay. Our tour guide was quite fun and very informative and friendly. A must do! Red Beach was a beautiful expanse of white sand and turquoise waves, gently crashing on the shore. A Caribbean delight! We snacked from the roadside stands lovely local treats! We had a lovely last evening in Esperanza, dining at the Trade Winds restaurant and enjoying the starlit bay. In the morning we took one last swim at the beach in front of the house, ending the water play portion of the trip as we had begun on the first evening. The sounds of the ocean caressed us while here, the sight of the ocean just outside the balcony washed our cares away, we had a wonderful time! Thanks for everything. Carmen could not have made us feel  more welcome. Thank you for a wonderful getaway from the hustle bustle of our lives in Pittsburg!

We're wrapping up a nice trip on the island. Contrary to any of our expectations, a puffer fish hung out with us for a half hour earlier today at the local beach. It was not afraid as long as we moved slowly, and we even touched its spiny back! Unbelievable. Just to note, that beach, a 2 minute walk from the Reefhouse (whose directions are in the back of the first page in the "Reefhouse Binder") is still the best we've found yet on the whole island for snorkelling. There is a middle sandy channel with large coral walls and boulders lining the sides. We also enjoyed Red and Blue Beaches Blue beach is especially secluded/private feeling.

Great House; Great caretakers you're in good hands!  Both were wonderful. Restaurants: Cafe Media Luna is outstanding. Only open for dinner Wednesday through Sunday 7-9 PM. Make a reservation. The portions are small but delicious. Probably not a place kids would enjoy. We also like the Sirena and Bananas in Esperanto and the Oasis right down the road. El Patio, only if you really enjoy Puerto Rican food. The night bioluminescent tour by Island Adventures was great. There were many kids on our boat and they had a blast! We also enjoyed the Mangrove forest walkway on the way to Green Beach. Enjoy! And hasta luego!

A very lovely house, easy to live in. The site is great and we have loved the location an easy walk into town, and so close to a sweet beach. The island is very welcoming; we especially liked snorkeling at Blue Beach, swimming in the Biobay, and hanging out at the ancient Cieba tree. We discovered a great cheese in the supermarket in town: a local, Puerto Rican Feta-like (very salty) cheese large round. Very much enjoyed some local boys, Ramses and Joey, who surfed nearly everyday in front of the house. They were open and friendly and our girls had fun with them. La Sirena in Esperanza was very good and Navio is definitely the best beach body surfing is great. Id love to return and Id come right back to this house!

April

We had a lovely time at the Reef house. We cooked big extravagant dinners and ate them by candlelight on the beautiful porch. . (That reminds me a new chef knife would be helpful). The Biobay was magical! It is a must see! Thanks for a wonderful house.

We really enjoyed our stay on the island. The house is nice and roomy and has a great view. We really liked Esperanza, several good restaurants La Sirena (good, but very long wait), Trade Winds (good, no wait)  ...Oh, and Siddhia Hutchinson's is a very nice, and affordable gallery/giftshop. Mary Matos was very helpful.

July

We had a great time! The house was everything you could want just having coffee with the view and the sound of the ocean was fantastic. We ate out only once! The six of us loved having our meals outside on the fantastic porch... We did the beach "tour". Enjoyed Sun Bay, Navio, Media Luna, Red and Blue hard to pick a favourite as all had their own character. We are leaving now for the 7 am ferry back home to Pittsburgh. Thanks for the great week.

P.S. The girls thought the Biobay AWESOME

August

Our two weeks in Vieques have been wonderful. We leave different than we arrived a different color (brown), more relaxed, and full of joy and love from being with people we love. We snorkeled and beached almost every day. Snorkeling has been my passion. I saw an octopus, an eel, and so many beautiful colored fish. Best was Media Luna early in the AM. The Manta Ray is a queen swimming before her admirers at Mosquito Pier. Food Pan con queso, donuts, fresh fish, vegetables from the ice cold truck and Chez Shack is tops! We are bringing home 5 conch shells art pieces from nature, found in a conch graveyard just off Blue Beach. The shells speak to me of the sea and the marvels beneath. What a wonderful mysterious world is beneath the surface of the ocean. Sitting on the porch at Reefhouse in the morning with a cup of coffee a wonderful way to start the day (especially after I hacked down the hibiscus bushes with a bread knife because they were obstructing the view) It took a few days to get into the rhythm. Learning to move slowly is the key. Learning about Vieques history and people a privilege. Good luck to them in their strength for self-determination. Hasta la Vista!

September

Our mini family reunion pulled folks from both coasts. The Reefhouse was the ideal getaway. Aside from the natural wonders that have been so important to us, we treasure the meaningful and warm encounters in town at the Panadeira or the Supermercado Morales, or the Fruit Stands or VCHT museum in Esperanza. Any time we tried to use our Spanish we were rewarded with warm responses and conversations in "Spanglish" or both English and Spanish! A highlight was stopping by a snack stand on Mosquito Pier and being invited to join a domino game (no gambling just FUN and FAST) before viewing the Mata Ray showing off to her adoring public. Learning about the many viewpoints on Viequess (and Puerto Ricos) future has been interesting. I hope all visitors will engage with the Viequenses to learn more! Adios
